Pennsylvania

Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains of southern Pennsylvania, the curative spring waters in Bedford and a luxury hotel began attracting the wealthy and influential in the 19th century. President James Buchanan used the hotel as his summer White House and received the first trans-Atlantic telegram, sent by England’s Queen Victoria, while in residence. A total of 10 U.S. presidents have been hosted, including James K. Polk, James Buchanan, Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan.

Today, a 30,000-square-foot destination spa is one of the few spas in the country utilizing natural spring water in all of its treatments. However, the resort’s eight mineral springs were first used by Native Americans for their healing properties and resulted in a 2,200-acre attraction that is now listed as a National Historic Landmark.
